In Memoriam 01:54
Thin bluish clouds move northeastwards high up and slowly. Help this soul, southwest wind of the rainy season, help this soul be healed Under bark of the fallen pine worms have carved fine mazes delicate circuitous houses. Maze-makers, help this soul die. Veins stand netted on the bluish boulder where rain wore the soft rock down. Blown rain of many winters, help this soul turn round. Shadows of dead branches, sunlight and dying things, O wilderness, one bird sings one note far off in the sunny wind. Rock was softer than the rain, tree weaker than the worm. No help for it. So soul be weak, fail, drift, and blow with wind through net and maze, and sing one note once only in the wilderness.
2.
Looking Back 01:04
Remember me before I was a heap of salt, the laughing child who seldom did as she was told or came when she was called, the merry girl who became Lot’s bride, the happy woman who loved her wicked city. Do not remember me with pity. I saw you plodding on ahead into the desert of your pitiless faith. Those springs are dry, that earth is dead. I looked back, not forward, into death. Forgiving rains dissolve me, and I come still disobedient, still happy, home.
3.
To the Rain 01:14
Mother rain, manifold, measureless, falling on fallow, on field and forest, on house-roof, low hovel, high tower, downwelling waters all-washing, wider than cities, softer than sisterhood, vaster than countrysides, calming, recalling: return to us, teaching our troubled souls in your ceaseless descent to fall, to be fellow, to feel to the root, to sink in, to heal, to sweeten the sea.
4.
Again and again the landwind blows, sending back the rain to the house of the rain. Seeking, seeking, the heron goes longlegged from creek to thirsty creek. They cry and cry, the windblown crows across the sky, the bare clear sky. From land to land the dry wind blows the thin dry sand from the house of sand.

about

Ursula Le Guin was one of the best American writers of the 20th century, in science fiction and out of it. More than that, she was also an immense impact on my life, my perception of language, my relationships, and more. She had this way with words that I won't think we'll see again soon, a kind of humility coupled with a deft hand in using them to unlock truth.

Most of all, she was a brave person, a voice against capitalism, fascism, cruelty, and war. She was a feminist thinker and a Buddhist and many other things besides. I miss her every day and this is my way to give something back to the community she was part of and to grieve for her. Even though she died years ago, I'm still grieving for her and will continue to release these readings every year, as close to her day of passing as possible.
